Corrections

Box Elder County has on-going need for corrections officers.  If you have thought about a career in law enforcement but didn’t have the time or money to go to the police academy on your own, consider this: Box Elder County doesn’t require POST certification to apply for a corrections job.  This means you could get hired with no law enforcement experience and Box Elder will pay for you to go to the academy.  You will be on the payroll while you go to school and will receive a significant pay raise when finished with the academy.   Female candidates are in demand right now to keep the desired ratio of male/female on a shift.

The hiring process involves:

            Formal application

            Passing the POST pre-selection exam

            Oral interview board

Thorough background check with polygraph test

Minimum Qualifications are:

            High School Graduate or equivalent

POST Special Functions and Corrections Certification (we will provide and pay for these certifications, if you place high enough on the hiring roster).

            Valid Utah Drivers License

Able to perform essential functions of the job

Able to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays

Must be 21 years of age or older

Must have no criminal history or record of arrests, except minor traffic and no record of alcohol or drug abuse.

Must have good communication skills and working knowledge of the English language, and a good ability to act and react with the public.

Must have a working knowledge of computers.

If you have questions about whether you meet the qualifications, or what the job entails, call the Jail Commander, Sandy Huthman at 435-734-3827, or Chief Deputy Kevin Potter at 734-3814.  To get an application, contact Peggy Madsen at the Personnel Office, 435-734-3348.
