Box Elder County has an opening for an Equipment Operator at the Landfill. The Heavy Equipment Operator performs a variety of skilled work in the operation and maintenance of heavy mechanized equipment during landfill operations, all with due regard for the safety of self, other employees and the public. Operators will become SWANA certified as a landfill operator and will certify in CPR and First Aid Administration. A Utah Class A Commercial Driver License is required upon employment start date. This position will require being scheduled on some Saturdays.

Performs a variety of skilled work in the operation and maintenance of heavy mechanized equipment during landfill operations, all with due regard for the safety of self, other employees and the public. Operator will become SWANA (Solid Waste Association of North America) certified in landfill Operations and will also be certified in CPR and First Aid Administration. Operator will be required to complete 20 hours of landfill specific training annually and become familiar with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality RCRA subtitle D compliance guide for Municipal Solid Waste Landfills. A Utah Class A Commercial Driver License is required upon employment start date.
Assures compliance with various federal and state agency regulations related to solid waste, environmental impact, land management, and overall solid waste operations.
Operator works under the general supervision of the Executive Director of the Box Elder County Landfill.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Position requires thorough knowledge of machinery, materials, and methods of constructing landfill sites and drainage systems. Considerable knowledge of principles and techniques of heavy equipment operation specific to Landfills. Operator must be in compliance with and understand safety standards related to equipment operation and maintenance as well as the identification of prohibited or hazardous wastes. Operator should be familiar with federal and state regulations related to non-hazardous waste and environmental protection, and resource management.
Operator must be familiar with and skilled in the operation of various types of heavy equipment, such as, waste compactors, bull dozers, loaders, excavators, and haul trucks, etc.
Operator should have basic mechanical skills and be able to troubleshoot minor equipment issues.
Operator should be able to communicate both verbally and in writing; have the ability to plan, organize, and maintain landfill operations. Must be able to communicate with the public, haulers, and co-workers in a positive and professional manner.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and talk and/or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
The applicant for this position must become a Certified Landfill Operator through The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA). Employee must be certified in waste screening and possess a valid commercial driver’s license.
Operator will be required to work outside in all types of weather. The landfill environment is extremely dirty and the operator will at times be exposed to both known and unknown hazards. Safety precautions and specific training is necessary to minimize risk.
Tasks require various physical activities, generally nominal muscular strain, such as lifting, walking, standing, stooping, reaching, etc. Communication, hearing and seeing are essential in performance of daily tasks. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking, guided and creative problem solving.
