The Box Elder County
Centennial Committee enthusiastically planned activities and projects
to commemorate Utah's Statehood Centennial.
The Utah Centennial Celebration was a celebration of the people. Many
volunteers were busy preparing for the "Celebration of the
Century". Some of the events planned were a Centennial Wagon
Train, Railroad excursion, Centennial Ball, Parade of the Rails, Cowboy
Poetry and individual community fourth-of-July celebrations throughout
the county. A pageant following the theme of Trail, Rails, and
Rockets with all the schools in the county participating in the
works. Other plays and celebrations in the schools were
planned. There were jacks, marbles, and baseball competitions as
well as Mumblety-Peg and jump rope exhibitions. The committee
also
helped sponsor a production entitled "Pistols & Petticoats".
The committee was committed to helping with community projects.
The Historic Railroad Depot in Brigham City was designated the County's
"Legacy" project. They helped with a monument near the historic
trail of the Salt Lake Cutoff that would mark the place where 25,000
people took a shortcut to California. Historical pictures were
matted and framed to display in the County Courthouse, and 500
Christmas tree ornaments were designed and assembled to be used on the
1996 White House Christmas Tree in Washington D.C.. Also, a way
to honor Utah's 100-year family farms and ranches was created. Those
Box
Elder County residents that were 100 years old or older were honored.
These centennial events and projects took a lot of volunteers and a lot
of money. The Centennial Committee did all they could to support
each community. In order to offset some of the costs, the
Committee created a beautiful Sepia toned 1996 Calendar with 130
historic photographs and other historic information, as well as
T-shirts, tote bags, aprons, hats and pins bearing the Box Elder County
logo as well as state-designated items for sale to the public.
The county also participated in the selling of Centennial license
plates. Money from these sales came back into Box Elder County
which helped to finance events and projects. Prizes were given on
a monthly drawing for those who purchased plates during the month.
Committee members showed 50-100 presentations to church, civic groups,
and boy scouts. They donated bunting to communities as well as
centennial items for 4th of July events. Memorabilia,
photographs,
and newspaper articles of the Centennial events were collected by Nancy
Bott and a scrapbook was created by Marla Young. Many of the
supplies were donated by a local scrapbook store, Down Memory
Lane. A beautiful tooled leather binder was created by Don Hansen
of Tremonton, and Gale Welling of
Fielding
built a beautiful pedestal stand for the scrapbook to sit on. It
was placed on the main level of the courthouse for public display.
The Utah Statehood Centennial was certainly a grand
celebration. Cities and counties all over the State of Utah
planned and participated in many events. The itinerary for State Celebrations was also very
well planned and promoted.
